Glossary of Terms Used on this Site.

Active

a certificate that is currently valid

AIT (Agreement on Internal Trade) Letter of Authority

a type of certificate that grants restricted authority to teach Career and Technology Studies and that may be re-issued by the Registrar

Applicable

where a teacher or teacher leader holds a certificate (teaching certificate, leadership certificate, superintendent leadership certificate)

Cancelled

where a certificate has been cancelled for disciplinary reasons for unprofessional conduct or professional incompetence

Certificate

a teaching certificate, leadership certificate or superintendent leadership certificate

Conditional Certificate

a certificate typically issued between 1968 and 1981 to individuals who  held special qualifications in fine arts or a recognized trades certificate

Expired

a certificate that is no longer active

Inactive

where a teacher or teacher leader may voluntarily surrender their certificate, where a certificate may be cancelled or suspended for non-disciplinary reasons or where the Registrar has been informed that a teacher or teacher leader is deceased

Interim Early Childhood Services (ECS) Permit

an additional certificate qualification typically issued between 1982 and 1991, for a set period of time, to teachers specializing in early childhood education

Interim Junior E Certificate

a teaching certificate with specific conditions, typically issued between 1950 and 1976, granting authority to teach Grades 1 to 9

Interim Professional Certificate

a teaching certificate that is valid for three years, with the possibility of renewal, or is valid until a date prescribed by the Registrar

in some circumstances prior to 1975, this certificate may have been issued, on a non-expiring basis

an Interim Professional Certificate is no longer valid once the Registrar issues a Permanent Professional Certificate or the certificate has expired

Interim Standard E Certificate

a teaching certificate with specific conditions, typically issued between 1950 and 1976, granting authority to teach Kindergarten to Grade 9

Interim Standard S Certificate

a teaching certificate with specific conditions, typically issued between 1950 and 1976, granting authority to teach Grades 4 to 11

Leadership Certificate

a permanent leadership certificate issued to individuals who

  • hold a Permanent Professional Certificate
  • successfully completed educational requirements approved by the Minister, or
  • hold an equivalent certificate from another jurisdiction that is acceptable to the Minister, and who meet the Leadership Quality Standard

a temporary leadership certificate, valid for a set period of time, issued to individuals who

  • hold a teaching certificate who are designated to be employed in the role of a principal or acting principal under the Education Act and
  • meet the Leadership Quality Standard

leadership certificates first came into force on September 1, 2019

Letter of Authority

a teaching certificate, issued by the Registrar, granting authority to teach for a set period of time with specific conditions

Not Applicable

where a teacher or teacher leader has never held a specific level of certification (for example, a leadership certificate or superintendent leadership certificate)

Permanent Early Childhood Services (ECS) Diploma

an additional certificate qualification issued to teachers specializing in early childhood education, typically between 1982 and 1991

Permanent Junior E Certificate

a teaching certificate granted to teach Grades 1 to 9, to individuals who held an Interim Junior E Certificate and who had two years of teaching experience  

Permanent Professional Certificate

a teaching certificate, issued to

  • teachers who hold an Interim Professional Certificate,
  • who are recommended for permanent certification,
  • who meet the Teaching Quality Standard and
  • who have a minimum of two years of teaching experience
Permanent Standard E and Standard S Certificate

a teaching certificate granting authority to teach Kindergarten through Grade 12, typically issued between 1950 and 1976

Permanent Standard E Certificate

a teaching certificate granting authority to teach Kindergarten to Grade 9, to individuals who held an Interim Standard E certificate and had two years of teaching experience

Permanent Standard S Certificate

a teaching certificate granting authority to teach Grades 4 to 11, typically issued between 1950 and 1976 to individuals who held an Interim Standard S Certificate and had two years of teaching experience

Portability Credential

portability credentials (class 1 or class 3) issued before 2015, are a type of teaching certificate known as a letter of authority, granting permission to individuals from other provinces or territories in Canada to teach, enabling labour mobility under inter-provincial or federal labour mobility agreements

Provisional Certificate

a teaching certificate typically issued between 1968 and 1981 to individuals holding special qualifications in areas such as the fine arts or vocational trades

Superintendent Leadership Certificate

a permanent superintendent leadership certificate issued to individuals who

  • hold a permanent leadership certificate,
  • have successfully completed educational requirements approved by the Minister,
  • have the ability to meet the Superintendent Leadership Quality,
  • have a recognized Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent,
  • have a Master’s degree from a university in Alberta or an equivalent standard, and
  • have three years of experience in a school system in Alberta or in a school system of equivalent standard;

a temporary superintendent leadership certificate is issued to an individual who

  • is employed in the role of a superintendent appointed under the Education Act,
  • may be completing requirements for a permanent superintendent leadership certificate, or
  • has recognized experience from another jurisdiction that is acceptable to the Minister
Suspended

where a certificate has been suspended for disciplinary reasons for unprofessional conduct or professional incompetence

Teacher

a person who holds a teaching certificate or once held a teaching certificate

Teacher Leader

a teacher who holds any type of leadership certificate or superintendent leadership certificate issued under the Education Act, or a teacher who once held a leadership Certificate or superintendent leadership certificate

Teaching Certificate

a Permanent Professional Certificate, Interim Professional Certificate, a Letter of Authority or any other authority to teach issued under the Education Act or a predecessor legislation

Temporary Letter of Authority

a certificate granting authority to teach for a set period of time and under specific conditions
